IELTS Band Score Calculator
Enter your four module scores and see your overall band the way IELTS actually calculates it. Raw Listening and Reading scores are welcome, converted for you.
Only the Reading conversion differs between the two.
Your overall band
7.0
7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 = 27.5
27.5 ÷ 4 = 6.875
IELTS rounds to the nearest half band, so 6.875 rounds up to 7.0.
Writing 6.5 is holding your average down.
IELTS Karo grades your Writing and Speaking in seconds against the official descriptors. Your first mock test is free.
Fix your weakest moduleHow IELTS calculates your overall band score
Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four module scores. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking each count for exactly 25 percent, so no single skill matters more than another. You add the four bands, divide by four, then round to the nearest half band.
The rounding is where most people get surprised. If your average lands on a quarter, IELTS rounds it up. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0. But an average like 6.125 rounds down to 6.0 because it sits below that halfway point, while 6.875 rounds up to 7.0. This is why two students with the same total can end up on different overall bands.
The calculator above shows this working on every result, so you can see exactly how your four scores become one number. For the full picture of what each band means, read our complete guide to IELTS band scores.
Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5
Sum = 27.5
27.5 ÷ 4 = 6.875
6.875 is closer to 7.0 than to 6.5, so it rounds up.
Listening 6.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0
Sum = 24.5
24.5 ÷ 4 = 6.125
6.125 is closer to 6.0 than to 6.5, so it rounds down.
Listening 6.5, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.0
Sum = 25.0
25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.25
6.25 sits exactly halfway, and half-quarter averages always round up.

Listening uses one table for both test types. Reading is scored differently for Academic and General Training, because the two tests use different texts.

Band score questions, answered
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
It is the average of your four module bands, each worth exactly 25 percent, rounded to the nearest half band. For example, Listening 6.5 plus Reading 6.5 plus Writing 7.0 plus Speaking 7.5 is 27.5, divided by four is 6.875, which rounds up to an overall band of 7.0.
What happens when my average ends in .25 or .75?
It always rounds up. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0. Averages that fall below the halfway point, such as 6.125, round down instead, so that one becomes 6.0.
Can one weak module fail my IELTS?
There is no pass or fail in IELTS. A weak module only pulls your average down. However, many universities and visa programs set a minimum for each module as well as an overall band, so always check both requirements before you book your test.
Is Reading scored differently for Academic and General Training?
Yes. The two tests use different texts, so General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. Band 7 needs 30 out of 40 in Academic Reading but 34 out of 40 in General Training Reading. Listening uses a single table for both tests.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7?
Roughly 30 out of 40 in Listening, 30 out of 40 in Academic Reading, and 34 out of 40 in General Training Reading. Writing and Speaking are scored by examiners against the official band descriptors rather than a raw count.
How long is my IELTS score valid?
Two years from your test date. Most universities and immigration authorities will not accept a Test Report Form older than that.
Can I retake just one module?
Where One Skill Retake is offered you can resit a single module within 60 days of your original test and keep your other three scores. Availability depends on your test centre and country.
