Speaking Part 1 Practice Questions on Technology

For Speaking Part 1, you can be asked short but precise questions about technology and its impact on our lives. Here are some example questions with answers:

  • 1. What is your typical favorite app?

Example: “My favourite app is Evernote, as it allows me to jot down notes, and save with date, time and reminders. It is a powerful productivity app that has allowed me to significantly boost my efficiency.”

  • 2. How do you utilise your computer?

I own a desktop PC and a laptop. The former is for gaming and video editing, whereas the latter is for official use such as sending and receiving emails, creating spreadsheets, and writing documents.

  • 3. Have you ever taken a computer course in the past?

I learned computers with a hit-and-trial method back in 1997, when my father bought my first PC. However, I strongly recommend anyone using a computer for the first time, to undergo a short course on the basics of operating a computer.

  • 4. Which browser do you use for surfing the internet?

Although I am a Chrome user, I have also started using Firefox to surf the internet, as it does not consume as much RAM and computer bandwidth as Google Chrome.

  • 5. Have you ever made a purchase online?

I am a digital marketing consultant, and I regularly buy subscriptions and ebooks online through my credit card. However, I only do so at trusted websites, because these days, data breaches are quite too common to take place.

Speaking Part 2 Practice Questions on Technology

This is the Speaking Part 2 Cue Card topic.

item of technology ielts speaking technology vocabulary

Describe an item of technology that you own, which is very important to you.

You should say:

  • What the technology is
  • When you got it
  • How often do you use it

And say how different your daily life would be without it.

For me, nothing is more important than a gaming PC that I bought brand new back in 2020. I still remember it was the peak of COVID, and I always wanted to upgrade my tech stack to improve my productivity.

One of my friends recommended me to a local PC Gaming shop, so I headed there and got a brand new gaming Desktop PC assembled. I handpicked each and every component, and I remember paying around 175,000 PKR for it. Fast forward to 4 years, it is still going strong, without the need of ever upgrading it. At that time, this is quite an amount, translating to around almost $1,200 USD at the prevailing exchange rates.

I use it as a daily driver for editing my Youtube channel videos, playing games and multitasking. It comes with a 600-watt powersupply, 32GB of RAM and a 6-GB of dedicated gaming graphics card. The best part is that my children even play games on it. I find it really satisfying to see that what I built for myself, is now also in use by my kids.

Had I not made the decision of buying this system 4 years ago, I would not have been able to edit my videos or play any games as laptops are not as powerful as desktop PCs. I now feel a sense of security by owning a gaming PC as my entire work is now dependent upon it. If I were to build the same system today, it would cost mre over 300 thousand rupees. I am glad I took the right decision 4 years ago instead of delaying it.

Speaking Part 3 Practice Questions on Technology:

Speaking Part 3 delves deeper into the broader implications of technology. Use this section to showcase your ability to discuss complex ideas and engage in a more analytical conversation. Here are some questions:

  • 1. Discuss the impact of technology:

The ubiquitous presence of technology has had a profound and multifaceted impact on society. On one hand, it has fostered greater global connectivity, improved communication efficiency, and accelerated scientific advancements. On the other hand, it has also contributed to social isolation, the spread of misinformation, and concerns about job displacement due to automation.

  • 2. Talk about the future of technology:

Looking ahead, the future of technology promises exciting possibilities such as advancements in artificial intelligence that could revolutionize various industries, personalized medicine tailored to individual needs, and even space exploration breakthroughs. However, ethical considerations surrounding these advancements need careful attention to ensure they are used for the betterment of humanity.

  • 3. Do you believe parents need to monitor the internet usage of their children?

Absolutely yes. When I was a teenager, my parents strictly observed my daily internet and computer usage. It was only that I am now a father that I realize why monitoring your kids is so important. I have 3 children, and I routinely inspect their internet usage to ensure that their minds do not get polluted by visiting immoral websites. Kids are particularly vulnerable because they have immature minds and it is up to the parents to ensure their safety online. Bullying and harassment are all too common these days. Hence, parents need to keep an eye on what their kids are doing on the internet.

  • 4. Do you believe that children should be given tablets and smartphones at an early age?

As a father, I have given instructions to my spouse not to provide any gadgets to children unless they are mature enough to understand how to use it. Mothers, in order to get a good nap, would often hand their children tech devices. This is something I am totally against at.

Children are too immature to decide what to do and how to use an iPad, an iPhone or any other smart gadget. The screen time interferes with their creative mindset. Hence, they need to play with other kids, instead of playing games all day long for hours on the smartphones.

Beyond memorization – Effective Learning Strategies:

  • Immerse yourself in tech talk: Surround yourself with technology-related content. Read tech news articles, watch science documentaries, and listen to podcasts that discuss the latest advancements. Pay close attention to how vocabulary is used in context.
  • Practice makes perfect: Don’t just memorise definitions. Actively use the learned vocabulary in conversation with friends, family, or even by speaking aloud to yourself.
  • Find a study buddy: Discussing technology and practicing speaking with a partner can be incredibly beneficial. Challenge each other with thought-provoking questions and provide constructive feedback on vocabulary usage.
  • Utilise online resources: Numerous websites and apps offer interactive vocabulary exercises specifically tailored to the IELTS exam. These tools can make learning engaging and help identify areas that require further practice.

By actively expanding your technology vocabulary and implementing the strategies outlined above, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the technology-related topics that may arise in your IELTS exam. Remember, fluency and confidence are equally important. Embrace the opportunity to discuss technology with passion and showcase your understanding of its impact on the world around us.

Bonus Tip: While a strong vocabulary base is crucial, avoid overusing complex words if it feels unnatural. Express yourself clearly and concisely, demonstrating your ability to communicate effectively using a range of appropriate vocabulary.
