Writing Task 1 Academic isn’t just easy, it is less time-consuming and provides a jumpstart to write your Task 2 response. The following IELTS diagram model answer is likely anywhere between an 8.5 to a 9.

Why do I say this? Because I have an 8.5 band in IELTS Writing, and my experience shows this to be a perfect answer that sums up all of the key points.

This is a process diagram taken from the IELTS Cambridge Book 8, Test 3.

In this question, you summarize the entire process laid out in the diagram, which could be in simple steps. All you need to do is describe what you see in no more than 4 paragraphs. Try to keep your answers under 200 words, but should the need be, you can reach up to 220. Make sure not to include any detail that is not asked.

How to Answer an IELTS Diagram Task 1?

  1. Rewrite the question in your own words and provide the facts that you will explain.
  2. You need to describe the overview, which sums up the entire diagram.
  3. Use the logical order to organize all of the stages in the diagram.
  4. Missing a stage means not getting complete marks for your Task Achievement.
  5. While paraphrasing is important, you need to use the correct words that perfectly translate to the right meaning. Just do not go over the board rewriting everything.
  6. Use linking words to highlight the stages and make comparisons wherever necessary.

The graph shows the production process of cement and concrete. Summarize the information, report key highlights and make comparisons where relevant.

Diagram Model Answer – Expected 8.5 to 9 Band score:

The illustrations display two production processes, one of cement and the other of concrete. This cement is later used in concrete production during the second process. While cement is produced in four steps, producing concrete is simpler and requires only a mixer.

The production of cement starts by crushing limestone and clay using a crusher. Once the material is converted into fine powder, it is then added to the mixer, where heat is applied at one end of the tube via a rotating heater. Once it is heated enough, the residual is then placed on to the grinder. This marks the final step, where the material is crushed into cement. The cement, after production, can then be bagged in the final process.

The concrete production takes place when the four essential items are mixed in specific quantities. Cement (15%), water (10%) and sand (25%) are mixed with stone gravels, which form 50% of the composition. They are all poured into a giant concrete mixer, which then continuously rotates, resulting in the production of concrete.

Task Achievement: Band 9

  • Strengths:
    • The response thoroughly describes both the cement and concrete production processes.
    • The sequencing of the steps is clear and logical, accurately reflecting the diagrams.
    • The task is addressed fully, with no major omissions or irrelevant details.
    • Comparative language is effectively used to highlight the differences in complexity between the two processes (“While cement is produced in four steps, producing concrete is simpler…”).
    • Details like proportions of materials for concrete (15% cement, 10% water, etc.) are included, showing a strong understanding of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.5

  • Strengths:
    • Ideas are logically organized, following the sequence of events in the diagrams.
    • Cohesive devices such as “after,” “once,” “then,” and “which” are used effectively to link ideas.
    • Paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear distinction between the processes of cement production and concrete manufacturing.

Lexical Resource: Band 9

  • Strengths:
    • A wide range of vocabulary is demonstrated, including technical terms such as “crusher,” “rotating heater,” “grinder,” “bagged,” and “proportions.”
    • Paraphrasing is used effectively, avoiding repetition of words directly from the diagram (e.g., “converted into fine powder” instead of just “powder”).

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5

  • Strengths:
    • The answer demonstrates a wide range of grammatical structures, including passive voice (“is produced,” “is crushed,” “are mixed”) and conditional clauses (“once it is heated enough”).
    • Sentence structures are varied, avoiding monotony.

Overall Band Descriptor: 8.5 to 9

This response is highly polished, demonstrating a strong command of all four criteria. It aligns closely with Band 9 descriptors.

The diagram provides a clear introduction, and contains key features of diagrams and makes a comparison between both processes. Both paragraphs have two different ideas discussed and linked well through the use of linking devices. All steps are explained in the chronological order, and nothing is missed. The word count is also more than 150, which is sufficient enough for this response. Complex sentences and passive voice used also add a range of grammatical structures.
