For most undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, you need IELTS for UKVI Academic with a minimum of 5.5 in all four components for the student visa (for pre-sessional courses or study visas below degree level). However, most universities set their own higher requirement of 6.0 to 7.0 in IELTS Academic, depending on the programme. Always check the specific page, not just the general university requirement.

An important 2026 Update:

UK student visa application fee is increasing from £524 to £558 for applications submitted from 8 April 2026. If your documents are ready, submit before that date to pay the lower fee. The IHS rate of £776 per year is not changing in this round.

Why Students Need IELTS for a UK Student Visa?

The UK government requires all international students from non-majority English-speaking countries to demonstrate English proficiency before studying in the UK. There are two separate requirements to satisfy, and understanding both is essential before you apply.

The first is the university admission requirement. Your chosen university sets a minimum IELTS score for the specific course you are applying to. This score determines whether your English is adequate for academic study on that programme.

The second is the UKVI visa requirement. The UK Home Office sets its own minimum. Even if your university accepts your score for admission, your visa can still be refused if the score does not meet the UKVI threshold.

Russell Group University Requirements

The 24 Russell Group universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Manchester, consistently require higher scores than the national minimum. Most demand 7.0 overall with no component below 6.5. Competitive programmes in medicine, law and journalism at these institutions often specify 7.5 overall with no individual band below 7.0.

As stated earlier, targeting a 7.0+ is always the best option to reduce risks and exponentially increase your chances of visa approval.

Mid-Tier University Requirements

Universities ranked between approximately 50th and 150th globally, such as the University of Leeds, University of Sheffield, Newcastle University and Queen Mary University of London, accept 6.0 to 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5. Many also offer pre-sessional English courses for students who score slightly below the entry requirement, allowing conditional admission.

Universities Accepting 5.5 Overall

Some UK universities accept 5.5 overall for undergraduate and postgraduate entry, including the University of Bedfordshire, University of Bolton, London South Bank University and Teesside University. IELTS for UKVI Academic or IELTS Academic: Which One to Take?

Both tests are identical in format, content, difficulty and scoring. The difference is enhanced security verification on the UKVI version, which is required by the UK Home Office for visa processing. The cost difference is minimal.

Students who take standard IELTS for their university application sometimes discover only later that UKVI requires the secure version for visa processing, depending on the institution type. This forces a retake and delays the application by weeks. Taking IELTS for UKVI from the start eliminates this risk entirely.

Always confirm the exact version of the test from your academic consultant or the university so that your effort and fee are not wasted.

IELTS for UKVI is accepted by every UK university and every UKVI visa category. There is no downside to taking it, and meaningful potential downside to not taking it.

IMPORTANT

UKVI will only accept tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre. Online tests are not accepted for UK visa applications regardless of which version you take.

Financial Requirements for UK Student Visa 2026

Meeting the IELTS requirement gets you through the academic door. The financial requirement is what gets your visa approved. The figures below are verified against current UKVI guidance.

Living Cost Requirements

UKVI requires you to demonstrate funds sufficient to cover your living expenses in the UK. The current official rates for 2026 are:

How to Calculate Your Total Required Funds

Your total required funds equal your living costs for up to 9 months plus any outstanding tuition fees. Two realistic examples for students applying for 2026 intake:

Use a currency converter to calculate the equivalent in your currency before your bank statement period. UKVI applies its own exchange rate. Use OANDA as a reference to estimate what you need in your local currency, but confirm with your bank before the 28-day window begins.

The 28-Day Rule

Your funds must be held in your bank account continuously for 28 consecutive days. The balance must not drop below the required amount for even a single day during this period. The end date of your 28-day window must fall within 31 days of your visa application submission date.

This is one of the most common reasons UK student visa applications are refused. Students often show the correct total amount, but the balance dips below the threshold on one or two days due to regular transactions. Move the required funds into a dedicated account during this period and leave them untouched.

IMPORTANT

UKVI checks every day of the 28-day period — not just the opening and closing balance. A single day below the required amount is grounds for refusal, even if you have the right total overall.

Whose Bank Account Can You Use?

Funds can be held in your own account, or in a parent or legal guardian account. If using a parent account, you must provide original bank statements, a birth certificate or Family Registration Certificate (FRC) proving the relationship, and a signed declaration from your parent confirming they are funding your studies.

Funds held in stocks, cryptocurrency, property or investment accounts that cannot be immediately accessed are not accepted. The account must be a standard current or savings account with funds accessible on demand.

How Much Does the UK Student Visa Cost in 2026?

Important: the visa application fee is changing on 8 April 2026. The table below shows both the current fee and the new fee after that date. All other costs remain the same.

For a typical one-year Masters programme, your visa-related costs before April 8 are approximately £1,300 to £1,600. For a three-year undergraduate degree, the IHS alone totals £2,716 upfront since it covers the full visa duration including additional months granted at start and end of course.

IMPORTANT

The visa application fee is non-refundable. If your visa is refused, you do not get the £524 or £558 back. The IHS, however, is refundable if your visa is refused or if you leave the UK before your visa expires.

Documents Checklist for UK Student Visa in 2026

A missing document is enough to get your application refused or significantly delayed. Go through this checklist carefully before submitting.

• Valid passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned return date
• Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your UK university including your CAS reference number
• IELTS for UKVI Academic score report meeting both your university and UKVI minimum requirements
• Bank statements showing required maintenance funds for 28 consecutive days closing within 31 days of application
• TB test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic in your country, mandatory for most nationals. Check the Home Office website for a detailed list.
• Academic transcripts and degree certificates with certified English translations if originals are in another language
• Visa application form completed online via the gov.uk portal
• IHS payment confirmation
• Passport-size photographs meeting UK visa specification

Additional Documents for Most Applications

• If using parental funds: parent bank statements, or birth certificate, and signed sponsorship declaration letter.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for UK Student Visa

1. Receive an unconditional offer from a UK university licensed as a Student Route sponsor.
2. Meet all pre-CAS requirements, paying the initial deposit, typically £3,000 to £6,000 and submitting required documents to the university.
3. Receive your CAS reference number from the university. You cannot apply for the visa without it.
4. Book and sit IELTS for UKVI Academic if you have not already. Confirm your result meets both the university and UKVI minimum requirements.
5. Book your TB test at an IOM-approved clinic in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi. You need the certificate before your VFS appointment.
6. Consolidate your funds. Ensure the required amount is held in an eligible account for the full 28-day period, ending within 31 days of your intended application date.
7. Complete your visa application online at gov.uk/student-visa. Pay the application fee and IHS surcharge during this stage. Apply before 8 April 2026 if possible to pay £524 instead of £558.
8. Book your biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre.
9. Attend your VFS appointment with all original documents and your TB test certificate.
10. Wait for a decision. Standard processing takes approximately 3 weeks (15 working days). Priority processing is available for approximately 5 working days at an additional cost of £990.

IMPORTANT

You cannot apply for a Student visa more than 6 months before your course start date. Applying too early results in automatic rejection on timing grounds.

Why UK Student Visa Applications Get Refused?

The overall grant rate for UK student visa applications in 2025 was 96% for most nationalities. Pakistan, India and China sit in the range of 85% to 90%, which is below the expected threshold. Understanding the most common reasons helps you avoid joining that 10%.

1. IELTS-Related Refusals

Taking standard IELTS instead of IELTS for UKVI is a common and entirely avoidable mistake. UKVI requires the secure version for visa processing and submitting the wrong test leads to immediate refusal.

Individual band scores below the minimum are just as problematic as a low overall score. A student who scores 6.5 overall but gets 5.0 in writing will be refused if the university or UKVI requires 5.5 in all components. Check every band, not just the overall.

Expired results are another preventable issue. IELTS results are valid for exactly 2 years from the test date. If your results expire between your university application and your visa application, you need to retake.

2. Financial Documentation Refusals

Funds not held for the full 28 consecutive days is the single most common reason for refusal among applicants who have the right amount of money. The balance dropping below the required amount even once during the 28-day window is sufficient grounds for refusal.

Bank statements older than 31 days on the date of application are not accepted. The closing balance date must fall within 31 days of your visa application submission.

Unacceptable sources of funds include property valuations, stocks and shares, cryptocurrency holdings, pension funds and overdraft facilities. UKVI only accepts funds immediately accessible in a standard bank account.

Academic Progression Concerns

UKVI assesses whether your chosen course makes sense given your academic background. A student with an engineering degree applying for a Masters in fashion design may face questions about academic progression. If there is a genuine reason for a change in direction, address it clearly in your personal statement.

Unexplained gaps in education or employment also raise concerns. If you have been out of education or work for more than a year between your last qualification and your proposed course, address this proactively in your application.

2026 Update: The Graduate Route and What It Means for Students

The Graduate Route is one of the main reasons the UK is attractive for most students as it allows graduates to stay and work in the UK for two years after completing a degree, without needing employer sponsorship.

However, from January 1, 2027, the Graduate Route duration for bachelor and masters graduates is reducing from two years to 18 months. PhD graduates retain three years. What matters is when you apply for the Graduate Route visa, not when you start or finish your course. Graduates who apply before December 31, 2026 still receive the full two years.

2026 UPDATE

If you want the full 2-year Graduate Route, you need to apply for it before 31 December 2026. Plan your study start date and programme length accordingly. A student starting a one-year Masters in September 2025 who graduates in September 2026 can apply for Graduate Route before the deadline and receive two full years.

Can Students Bring Dependants to the UK?

Since January 2024, only students enrolled in PhD or research-based postgraduate programmes at universities with a track record of compliance can bring dependants — spouse and children — to the UK. Students on taught Masters, undergraduate and diploma programmes can no longer bring family members under the Student Route.

If you are a PhD student bringing dependants, you must show additional maintenance funds of £845 per month per dependant in addition to your own living costs.

Meeting the IELTS requirement is what determines whether your visa journey begins at all. The following advice addresses the specific challenges test-takers face.

Start Early and Diagnose Honestly

Give yourself 10 to 12 weeks of focused preparation before your test date. Begin with a full practice test under timed conditions to establish your current baseline. Be honest with the results. Many students overestimate readiness because their daily English is strong, but IELTS Academic requires specific skills in critical writing and complex reading that are distinct from conversational fluency.

Where Students Typically Lose Marks?

Writing Task 2 is consistently the lowest-scoring component for test-takers. The challenge is not grammar or vocabulary; it is developing a coherent, structured academic argument that responds precisely to the question asked. Practise writing full essays under timed conditions of 40 minutes and focus on structure, logical progression and using evidence to support a position rather than just stating opinions.

Speaking Part 2 requires you to speak uninterrupted for two minutes on a topic you have had only one minute to prepare. Practise this format daily. Record yourself. Listen back. Identify filler words and eliminate them.

Listening to British accents at slow speeds. Spend time daily with BBC Radio 4, BBC podcasts and academic YouTube channels from UK universities to build familiarity with the pace and register of the actual listening test.
